Daily Creates Week 1

The category for this week’s daily creates was writing

  1. #tdc5239 #ds106 #dailycreate What’s the last book you read? Share it with us, as a photo, or as a review

The last book I read was called Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden.

  • I found this book to be a very emotional read, as the situations that occur in the book could be likely to happen in real-life. The characters in the book also experience many emotions that can be easy for readers to relate to and feel. I found myself unable to put the book down because I was intrigued with the storyline. Also, I was very happy with how it came to an end, which made it even better!

This post related to storytelling as I found that the author was able to trigger different emotions in me as I was reading. The book was written in a way where each chapter was one of three different perspectives of the main characters. As the story switched between the different points of view I found myself feeling different emotions depending on which point of view was given. I found myself holding onto pieces of information from a certain character and thinking about how the other characters will feel with that information.

  1. #tdc5185 #ds106 #dailycreate Describe in writing for someone who cannot hear, the feeling of silence
  • My initial few feelings when experiencing silence is peacefulness, relaxation, and at times it can feel a bit lonely. If silence elongates, I find that my thoughts become louder and bigger. I have no distraction from my own thoughts and they become the whole moment, which can sometimes be a good thing or a bad thing.

This post is also related to storytelling as I tried to include some of the 5 components of storytelling into it. I am still working on sufficiently including all 5, so this is definitely a work in progress. I was able to try including thoughts and emotion, but am still working on getting location, dialogue, and action into it.

  1. #tdc4822 #ds106 I love … Kim Douillard tells us about things that she loves in her recent blog post. Tell us what you love.
  • Something I really love is iced coffee. The first sip of iced coffee in the morning is the best way to start my day. I love how there are many different kinds and flavors. It can be hot or cold, there are many kinds of milk and milk alternatives, and different ways to sweeten it (if you want to). I think that everyone’s coffee choice is personal and unique to them. Another plus of iced coffee is it can provide you energy if it’s caffeinated.

I think this post also relates to storytelling as I tried to use my voice in the text to set the tone, and mood of the passage. In my response to this prompt I attempted to have the reader to see iced coffee as a way to express yourself in a playful and fun way.

Multimedia Story DRAFT

For my multimedia story project I am going to walk from my apartment to the top of Mount Tolmie.

On this adventure I am going to observe how going outdoors and then into nature can change my mindset, stress levels and emotions. I’m going to stop and check in at multiple points on the journey and note my surroundings, the noise level, the amount of people around, and my thoughts and feelings in that moment.

The shape of the story will revolve around how going outdoors into nature and moving one’s body can impact our mindset and emotions. Also, to investigate the progression of my mindset as the adventure progresses.

The equipment I will need for this adventure will be:

  • Proper walking footwear
  • Headphones with a microphone for quality narration
  • A fully charged phone for recording
  • A water bottle
  • A notebook and pen

The media I’m going to use are:

  • Short Video clips
  • Pictures
  • Audio recordings

To integrate the media in alignment with Mayer’s Principles of Multimedia Learning, I will make the content engaging and easy to process. To apply the coherence principle I will avoid any unnecessary effects, sounds, or visuals that could distract from the purpose of the adventure. Also I will integrate the modality principle by combining visuals with spoken narration, and by not using large amounts of on screen text. I will also keep the redundancy principle in mind by minimizing the use of text during a narrated presentation.

All About Me!!!

Hi everyone!!!

My name is Jenna and I’m in my 4th year majoring in biology. I’m planning to hopefully graduate the spring of 2027!

In my biology degree, I have learned that I am very interested in the human and animal biology classes, rather than plant biology. In the last few semesters I have enjoyed courses like chordate zoology and animal physiology! The labs for those classes were the best part as they were very hands-on and interesting. For example in my animal physiology lab my group and I got to experiment how blood pressure and heart rate decrease differently whether you are standing vs laying down while recovering from intense exercise! It was so interesting that my partners and I got to participate ourselves then research the outcomes of the experiment and why we got certain results!

I grew up in Abbotsford with my parents, my brother, my grandma and my cat. Before moving to the island for university, I had only been to Victoria once and I loved it so much. When I moved here I didn’t know anyone, and I was so nervous about making friends. I got beyond lucky and met my best friend Holly on my first day on campus! Holly and I have been roommates now for 2 years and I live here in Victoria all year round now. Although, I do visit Abbotsford occasionally to see my hometown friends and family. This is my second summer I have spent here and I’m very excited for the warm and sunny days ahead.

My hobbies include going to the gym, hiking, exploring, painting, and reading.  Unfortunately during the school year I get very busy with studying so I’m very excited to get back into my favourite hobbies this summer. Since living in Victoria, I have discovered that I love going to the beach in my free time as well. I can’t believe that I am in walking distance to the beach now and can go very often. I recently visited Botanical Beach and Sombrio Beach and it was amazing and I can’t wait to explore more this summer! If anyone reading has any fun hiking suggestions, or cool beaches to visit please let me know!!

I do not have any experience with multimedia in education at all, so I’m very excited to learn lots of new things! I’m looking forward to learning how to navigate my blog, and connect with others in this course!
