There’s not much more powerful magic of nostalgia than the music of youth. Use The Nostalgia Machine to choose a year from your childhood and then find a song that resonates with you. Share out either a screenshot of your chosen year or a link to the video that caught you attention and drew you back into the past.
- In the nostalgia machine I chose the year 2015. One of the songs that presented was Can’t Feel my Face by the Weekend. This song brings me back to when I used to do summer swim club with my brother and our friends. This song was always playing when we would warm up doing dry-land exercises before getting into the pool.
- This nostalgic song is related to storytelling as after I listened to some of it, it brought up locations, actions, thoughts, and emotions. The song tells a story by bringing me to the pool side, with the hot summer sun beaming down, feeling excited to start swim practice. I remember thinking about the upcoming swim meets, and feeling a bit nervous for them. Also, some dialogue it brings up is talking about the sets we had planned for practice that day, or chatting with my friends from swim club.

Tell us the latest thing in music you learned. Might have been some time ago, but could be rather recent thing.
New musician you found e.g. on the internet? Some fact about a composer, piece of music, musician you learned?
- This may be a very basic discovery, but about 6 months ago I became obsessed with Noah Kahan’s music. He just released a new album a few weeks ago, and it’s amazing. I believe the reason why I enjoy his music so much is because of how much it relates to storytelling. I learned that the 5 most important components in a story is location, action, thoughts, emotion, and dialogue. Many of the songs in his album include some, if not all, the important components. While listening to his music I find myself picturing what he is singing about.

Do songs have a color? Now they do. Share any song and what color that song is.
- I believe certain song do display a very vivid colour. For example, Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish. The song gives a delicate, deep blue colour. First of all, the song is talking about the colour of the ocean in someone’s eyes, which gives me the idea of blue. In my opinion, the song also evokes a safe and reassuring emotion in me, which also reminds me of the same blue. She also sings the song in a very soft tone, which makes me think of a lighter blue this time. This song again relates to storytelling as it contains some of the main components to telling a story. This song is very emotional with her lyrics, and her tone while singing.
