My Adventure up Mount Tolmie: How Nature Changed my Mindset
Narrating the Process: What Decisions I made and Why:
- For this assignment I decided to walk up Tolmie Mountain and document through videos, photos and text how my mindset for the day changed throughout the walk.
- In my experience, I have always noticed that doing some physical activity outside helps we get into a better mindset if I’m feeling stressed with life.
- On this adventure I wanted to pay closer attention and document how my thoughts and emotions change throughout the journey
- During the entire experience I stopped at multiple points to take photos, record videos, or reflect how I was feeling both mentally and physically throughout the journey
- I chose to do this journey in the morning as I was feeling very overwhelmed with my to do list for that day.
Planning the Adventure:
- I chose Mount Tolmie because it is a very close walk to my apartment, and I decided to start documenting the journey with my walk over to the Mountain.
- Another reason why I chose Tolmie was because it is a familiar location for me, and there are beautiful views, and a variety of trails
- Before beginning I packed my phone to capture photos and videos, and brought along a water bottle as it was a very warm day.
- I also made sure I was wearing the appropriate footwear for the trail
- My goal was to not only document the beautiful scenery, but also the changes in my mood and mindset as I progressed through the hike.
The Adventure:
Check-in Point #1
- After leaving my apartment I stopped a bench a few minutes away from my apartment to just record how I was feeling in that moment before starting my journey.
- I couldn’t record myself talking because the traffic was quite loud, so I will documented my mindset and headspace in a notebook.
- In this moment I was feeling very stressed and mentally overwhelmed by school, work, and everyday responsibilities.
- All my thoughts were focused on everything I needed to accomplish this day.

Additional Photos of the Journey:

Applying Mayer’s Principles of Multimedia Learning:
Coherence Principle:
- I made sure to only include media that directly supported my story about mental health and the benefits of spending time outdoors
Signaling Principle:
- I organized the story’s into different sections that represented different stages of the hike. Different check-in points were presented in order while progressing up the mountain.
Contiguity Principle:
- I placed photos and videos directly alongside the reflections recorded at each stop. This helps to connect my thoughts with the visuals from that specific point in the journey.
Challenges and Solutions:
- Traffic was too loud to record and hear myself speaking in the videos
- I had brought along a notebook and pen to record any thoughts or feelings throughout the hike just in case.
- This was extremely helpful in this moment as recording was not going to work with the traffic noise
- Another challenge was remembering to stop and reflect on how I felt. I found myself focused on the walk itself instead of recording reflections
- While walking I mapped out where I wanted to stop throughout the walk
- I captured more than enough photos and videos, so choosing which media clips I wanted to use also presented a challenge
- I assessed the videos and chose the most relevant ones that also go by Mayer’s Principles of Multimedia Learning.
Final Summary Reflection:
This project helped me recognize how powerful the outdoors, and a bit of physical activity can be on my mental health, mindset, and stress levels. By intentionally writing or recording my thoughts throughout the journey, it helped me become more aware of the positive effects that nature and physical activity have on my mindset. This experience reminded me that taking time away from daily stressors can improve focus, create life balance, and reduce stress and anxiety. I hope this journey can also others who may experience the same stress, or overwhelming feelings as I do.
Incorporating Feedback:
I asked a few friends for feedback on my draft portfolio and I also had them look over my final project as well. A few pointers I got were:
- Try not to include useless clips of scenery from my video clips as it will disengage the viewers.
- Keep the videos of the check-in points short and straight to the point.
- Provide some final reflections about what I learned and any improvements I would change if I were to do this again.
After receiving this feedback I cut down my video lengths and I didn’t include as many videos of the journey where I wasn’t speaking to the camera. I also added in a final reflections summary at the end to summarize everything.
